NCAA grants Martell immediate eligibility

Miami opens the 2019 season in Orlando against Florida. Without Martell on campus and Haskins off to the National Football League, he's the clear favorite to be the starter for the Buckeyes.

There's no doubt this comes as welcome news for Miami and Martell who will be looking to turn around a program that's not quite been able to turn the corner from its glory days.

He scoffed at the notion that he would leave Columbus if Justin Fields transferred in. "I've put two years of working my ass off into something that I've been praying for and dreaming of my whole life".

On Jan. 10, news broke that Martell's name was in the NCAA's transfer database and was exploring a transfer.

Martell, a former four-star recruit at Ohio State, transferred to Miami after the 2018 season.

Brett McMurphy of Stadium was the first to report the news. He'll have three seasons of eligibility at Miami.

"We are pleased with this ruling and appreciate the NCAA recognizing that this waiver met the criteria under the membership established guidelines", Miami athletic director Blake James said in a statement. "We look forward to seeing Tate compete for the Hurricanes this season".
