Northam, meanwhile, insisted in an interview on CBS Monday, that he would not resign over the 1984 yearbook picture, which showed a person in blackface next to another wearing the robes and hood of the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan.

He says he's learned that he needs to better understand what it means to be "born in white privilege".

On Face the Nation on Sunday, host of CBS This Morning Gayle King was on to preview her interview, airing Monday, with the governor.

The calls for Fairfax to resign come as Virginia's Democratic governor and attorney general are embroiled in scandals involving the past use of blackface.

Meredith Watson, who accused Fairfax of raping her in 2000 while the two were students at Duke University, is willing to testify at an impeachment hearing and would provide two other people she told of the alleged assault the day after it occurred, said attorney Nancy Erika Smith in a statement late Saturday night. "Virginia also needs someone who is strong, who has empathy, who has courage and who has a moral compass", Northam said.

Fairfax, 39, has said his encounter with a woman who accused him of forcing himself on her sexually in Boston in 2004 was entirely consensual.

Northam also added to CBS that the first time he had seen the photo was after it had surfaced on February 1.

Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax was at the State Capitol in Richmond on Monday.

Democratic delegate Patrick Hope threatened to introduce articles of impeachment against Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax, who is now the subject of a second credible sexual-assault allegation.

Mr Fairfax denied the allegations and said he was the victim of a smear campaign.

The two women deserve to be heard, but at the same time, he deserves due process, Fairfax said.

Already facing calls to resign over his "blackface" scandal, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam triggered more outrage, mockery and some serious fact-checking, after referring to the first Africans in the U.S. as "indentured servants".

King quickly rebuked him: "Also known as slavery".

"It's obvious from what happened this week that we still have a lot of work to do", he said.

"Right now, Virginia needs someone that can heal".

The top three Democrats in Virginia's state government are now dealing with various scandals - Gov. Ralph Northam and state Attorney General Mark Herring both admitted to having worn blackface in the 1980s. After the second allegation was made Friday, Fairfax - the second African-American to ever win statewide office - was barraged with demands to step down from top Democrats, including a number of presidential hopefuls and most of Virginia's congressional delegation. Mark R. Warner and Rep. Robert C. "Bobby" Scott, say Fairfax should step down if the allegations are proven true, stopping short of an outright call for resignation.

I really don't get why Ralph Northam or his comms team thinks it helps him to communicate in public.

If Fairfax were to leave, it's unclear who could replace him as lieutenant governor.

Northam has admitted to wearing blackface while impersonating Michael Jackson at a 1984 dance contest, but has denied that he was in a yearbook photograph depicting a man in blackface sharing a beer with a hooded klansman.
