Empire Actor Jussie Smolett Reports Hate Crime Attack in Chicago

The Chicago Police Department has appealed for witnesses to the attack, said to have been perpetrated by two white men at 2.42am as Smollett was leaving a branch of Subway.

Smollett fractured a rib during the attack and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was treated.

Police wouldn't release the actor's name, but a statement from the Fox studio and network on which Empire airs identified him as Jussie Smollett. "Detectives are now working to gather video, identify potential witnesses and establish an investigative timeline", CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement to the paper.

Police said the 36-year-old reported being attacked while walking downtown about 2am on Tuesday. We have to love each other regardless of whatever sexual orientation we are.

"GLAAD reached out to Fox and Jussie's team today to offer assistance as well as support for him", the statement reads.

After the shocking attack was revealed, there was an outpouring of support for the actor across social media with a number of stars showing their support, including John Legend.
