Counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway echoed Kelly's comments later Sunday, calling outcry over the wall "a silly semantic argument".

While Washington remains deadlocked, 380,000 workers have been told to stay home without pay, and 420,000 others, including Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screeners, members of the Coast Guard and Border Patrol officers, must work without pay. "But only saying "wall or no wall" is being very disingenuous and turning a complete blind eye to what is a crisis at the border".

He also reiterated that his administration will cut off aid to several Central American countries that, Trump said, have done little to stop their citizens from coming to the USA illegally. -Mexico border but it falls in lock step with recent statements out of the administration.

President Donald Trump and Democrats are trading blame for the partial government shutdown.

President Donald Trump discussed the government shutdown stalemate at the White House with advisers including Vice President Mike Pence, legislative director Shahira Knight and acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, an official said.

"Either we build (finish) the Wall or we close the Border ..." one of Trump's four tweets about the border said in part.

Negotiations are at a stand still over the holiday season.

"The resort, on Hawaii's Big Island, features a golf course, six restaurants, and a 10,000-square-foot oceanfront pool".

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is so outraged about the shutdown that she is now defiantly relaxing at a sun-soaked Hawaiian resort.

John Kelly said USA must curb drug demands and expand economic opportunity to halt illegal immigration.

Dozens more migrants have been rescued in recent days, with the numbers described as "deeply concerning" by the government. He said the Home Office "has not been taking this seriously enough and the crisis has continued to escalate".

In recent months, the migrants fleeing the region have been typified by a caravan that Mr Trump labels an "invasion", as thousands make their way through Mexico en route to the United States border.

Kelly noted the agents said they needed a "physical barrier in certain places", in addition to "technology across the board", and "more people".

"They can call it anything they want to, barrier or fence", Roberts said.

Earlier this month, Trump said he would be "proud" to shut down the government over border security. They singled out Nancy Pelosi, who is set to become the speaker of the House of Representatives next week, when the Democrats will take over majority control of the House.

The House and the Senate convened for just minutes on Thursday before closing until next week.

They will be back in session on Monday for a pro forma - in which no business is conducted - but will not formally gavel in until Wednesday.

"Democrats have offered Republicans three options to re-open government that all include funding for strong, sensible, and effective border security - but not the President's immoral, ineffective and expensive wall".

Pelosi is expected to become speaker of the House on January 3 because Democrats won a House majority in November's elections.

'Depends what's in it.
