Former US President George HW Bush will be mourned on Thursday (Dec 7) at the Houston church where he worshipped for many years, a final public farewell before his remains are taken by train to their resting place at his Texas presidential library.

The passing of Bush, only the second president to see his son follow him to the Oval Office, has led Americans to reflect on his life of duty and service to country as a leader of the so-called "Greatest Generation".

The crowd at the funeral service - and thousands online - were visibly emotional by Bush's last conversation with his dad. The Oak Ridge Boys recalled performing for him for decades and joked that Bush "fancied himself to be a good bass singer".

Bush died last week at the age of 94.

"We remember your service". However, there were not greetings exchanged between the Trumps and the Clintons, or the Carters.

The cathedral service was a tribute to the patriarch of one of the nation's most-powerful political families - it occupied the White House for a dozen years -and to a faded political era that prized military service and public responsibility.

On Tuesday, while speaking before the WSJ CEO Council, Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor, thanked both Donald and Melania Trump for their graciousness throughout this process, adding that President Trump "couldn't have been nicer" when he called to pay his respects.

Bill Clinton and Mrs. Obama smiled and chatted as music played. Obama cracked up laughing at someone's quip.

Since Bush's death, Trump has traded his usual provocative posture for one of respect and solemnity, tweeting before heading to the cathedral about "a day of celebration for a great man".

They have quality players, but in those circumstances you can't give them the kind of space we did. Rafael Benitez's Magpies are one place ahead of West Ham in 13th, albeit on goal difference.
