"There's some anticipation issues we're going through right now and that's to be expected, but I think come Sunday we'll have a pretty good grasp", Gruden said.

After starting quarterback Alex Smith broke his leg followed by backup quarterback Colt McCoy suffering the same injury, Mark Sanchez was brought in.

The team needs to sign a quarterback to back up Mark Sanchez, the only healthy signal-caller on the roster who was signed by the team just two weeks ago.

Smith, 34, went down with a broken right leg in Week 11. The question remains if Kaepernick is blacklisted by the NFL.

"He's been discussed for sure", Gruden said. "Unfortunately there has, to this point, been nothing that the courts or the league has done about it and that's the disappointing part, because these good football players didn't commit a crime, he didn't put his hands on anybody, murder anybody, you know, do anything that's that insanely crazy that he deserves to be banned from our football league".

"He's been talked about and discussed, but we'll probably go in a different direction".

Gruden said the Redskins made a football decision only on Kaepernick.

Washington Redskins quarterback Mark Sanchez looks to pass during an NFL football game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia. The 32-year-old Sanchez hasn't won a regular-season start in

Reed, safety blanket on and off the field, has taken extra steps to help Sanchez get comfortable in the offense. But when we had a short week going to Dallas [on Thanksgiving] you had to have someone in here who had some similar conceptual awareness that we had with Colt. In 2009, Sanchez's rookie year, the Jets started the season 4-6 but ended the season by winning five of their last six games, locking up the wildcard spot.

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman believes teams are now more willing to fumble away their playoff chances rather than sign free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick. It was his first time seeing National Football League action since Week 17 of the 2016 season.

"Gruden said if it were Week 1, there would be a "great possibility" of signing Kaepernick".

"In order to utilize someone like Colin Kaepernick's skill set, you're talking about a whole new group of formations and run concepts", Gruden said.

He was the first player to kneel during the United States national anthem.

Sanchez had only about 20 percent of the Redskins' playbook at his disposal when he replaced McCoy on Monday night. He went 13/21 for 100 yards and an interception and was largely ineffective in the 28-13 loss to the Eagles.
