Seattle Officially Announced as NHL's 32nd Team

The Seattle Hockey Partners will pay NHL owners $650 million to join. The other 30 teams will only be able to protect seven forwards, three defensemen, and a goalie, or eight total skaters, regardless of position, plus one goalie. However, Seattle won't begin play until the 2021-22 season, so things could change a lot by then. The Coyotes are staying in the desert, but they're moving out of the Western Conference's Pacific Division as part of the NHL's upcoming realignment that will coincide with the welcoming of the new Seattle franchise to the league.

Bettman explained the new franchise will be stocked under the same rules as the ones that were in place for the league's 31st expansion team - the Vegas Golden Knights.

"Today is an exciting and historic day for our league as we expand to one of North America's most innovative, attractive and fastest-growing cities", NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. Strong ownership led by billionaire David Bonderman and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, a downtown arena in a sports-crazed city and a season-ticket drive that drummed up 10,000 orders in 12 minutes all cleared the way for the National Hockey League to add another team less than three years after approving a franchise in Las Vegas.

The new NHL Seattle franchise will play in the Pacific Division with Las Vegas and Vancouver.

The NHL's newest franchise will join Major League Baseball's Seattle Mariners and the WNBA's Seattle Storm in the city.

NHL votes to give expansion franchise to Seattle

"There's going to be a built-in rivalry (with Vancouver)", said Tod Leiweke, Seattle Hockey Partners president and CEO.

Early this year, the Seattle Times polled fans on a potential name for the expansion team, with the Sockeyes, Totems and Metropolitans getting into the Top 3.

"Seattle's one of the fastest-growing cities in the country", Commissioner Gary Bettman said recently.

The NHL's launch in Seattle will show how starved fans are for another team.

The Seattle group already has paid a $10 million deposit to the league, along with its official application. The ownership group is set to build a sprawling training center in the Northgate neighborhood that it hopes will become a hub for the growth of hockey in the region. Perhaps most notable is that in addition to housing the NHL team, the facility will also host adult and youth hockey, training camps, tournaments, figure skating and public ice skating. Obviously, Seattle's a great city.
