The couple, from the United Kingdom, made headlines around the world when their engagement ring fell down a utility grate in Times Square during what was believed to be Drennan's proposal.

The saga began just before midnight Friday in Times Square, the NYPD said.

Amazingly, the police did find the ring a day later.

Passersby look on as a man (right) peers through a utility grate in Times Square, New York, after the engagement ring he was giving his girlfriend fell from his hands.

The cops returned Saturday morning to try with daylight on their side, and found the ring - only now Drennan and his bride-to-be, who hasn't been publicly named, were nowhere to be found.

Finalistes de la précédente Europa League, les joueurs de Rudi Garcia sont totalement passés à côté de leur sujet cette saison. "On avait une équipe avec 7-8 titulaires en moins, mais si en plus on défend mal et on se met des buts contre notre camp".

The NYPD has released pictures of the couple and the ring in the hope of reuniting them with the jewellery. It was not how police described it initially; that John had proposed over a grate, and then dropped the ring. "Help us find them?"

They're now liasing with the police to get the ring back. A spokesperson declined to identify the couple or offer details about how the ring was found.

The NYPD Twitter account gave credit for finding the ring to the department's special operations bureau, which also includes specialized aviation, harbor, and horse-mounted units.

The department later posted a photo of the ring in question. And when they ended up in Times Square, the ring fell off. "The (now) happy couple is back in their home country, but thanks to your retweets they heard we were looking for them!"
