Elmhurst police participate in Prescription Drug Take Back Day

"Any time you have unused or unwanted medication laying around the house, it can bring about a lot of problems", Pevehouse said.

Although they had only been taking drop-offs for a few hours, the department says they collected over 100 pounds of drugs.

HealthSource is partnering with the DEA, rewarding those who bring unused prescriptions to any of the collection sites with Wellness Vouchers, which can be used on nutritional supplements and wellness treatments created to relieve back and neck pain.

After the success of the last National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in April, the program returns again Saturday. Law enforcement officers will be present at sites throughout Alabama to receive unused prescription drugs for safe and proper disposal.

The National Take Back initiative in the Sedgwick County area will collect any expired or unwanted prescriptions or over-the-counter medications.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, October 27 from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. "It's really education about how to safely dispose prescription drugs".

No questions will be asked at the drop-off, the release stated.

If you missed Barling Drug Take Back you can still participate. It's sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration in cooperation with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office.

A federal study shows more than 65% of people who misuse prescription pain relievers obtain them from a friend or a relative.
