One officer dead, four hurt after shooting in SC

One of the officers died. Florence Police Officer Terrence Carraway died from his injuries.

"Thanks to our MRAP, armored personnel carrier, we made sure all the officers that were shot were protected and brought for medical atttention", he said. FCSO told ABC that two other officers were described as "touch and go".

Five police officers were shot, including 3 deputies from the Florence County Sheriff's Office and 2 officers from the Florence Police Department. He was reportedly a 30-year veteran of the Florence Police Department.

"Prayers with injured officers in Florence and their families", South Carolina Senator Tim Scott said on social media. Neighbors reported hearing multiple rounds of gunfire.

One high school in the area, West Florence High School, confirmed it had done into lockdown during the chaos. Heavy will continue to update as more information is known about Carraway.

The officers were attempting to serve a warrant to someone inside of the home when the gunman opened fire on them.

President Donald Trump offered "thoughts and prayers" while praising the law enforcement officer.

Heidler asked for prayers for the slain officer, calling him the "bravest police officer I have ever known".

"This is absolutely devastating", Rep. Tom Rice, R-S.C., tweeted. The man then barricaded himself in the home with children during the two-hour standoff, Nunn said.

The Florence County Emergency Management office had reported on Twitter at about 5:00pm that an "active shooter" situation was under way in Florence.

The children are now safe and the suspect is in custody receiving treatment in hospital after surrendering during negotiations.

There was also a warning that the shooter was behind the residence and still firing at that time, with the dispatcher urging those headed to the scene to "use precaution".
