San Jose Making Huge Push to Land Erik Karlsson

After a long summer of speculation, the Ottawa Senators have traded captain Erik Karlsson to the San Jose Sharks. In return, the Senators will get a first-round pick in 2019 or 2020, centre Chris Tierney, a second-round pick in 2019 (the best of the two San Jose now has), prospect centre Josh Morris, prospect Rudolfs Balcers, and defenceman Dylan DeMelo. Ottawa was going to be bad with or without Karlsson, but the Caps' biggest competition in the East appears to be the Lightning, a team that was favored to beat Washington in the conference final last season but fell in seven games.

Sharks general manager Doug Wilson had a good reason to be in his hometown Thursday. "The word "elite" is often thrown around casually but Erik's skillset and abilities fit that description like few other players in today's game".

Karlsson now joins a blue line that already boasts Brent Burns and Marc-Edouard Vlasic giving them three all-star caliber defensemen and instantly signalling that the Sharks are a true contender for the Cup.

In the end, the defenceman and the Senators did not see eye to eye - with the deal being done on the eve of the first on-ice session at training camp.

If the Senators decided to make this move now, that means contract talks they were having with Karlsson's camp were going nowhere and he had no plans to re-sign here. It becomes a first if the Sharks sign him and SJ makes it to the final this season.

Dallas also remains interested, but the price is reportedly too high for their liking.

Olivier Vernon, who is injured, protested previous year , as did new Giants safety Michael Thomas, who remained on his feet. The poll, which was conducted among 1,038 voters between September 6-9, comes amid renewed controversy over the protests.

Karlsson had been rumored to be on the move since before last season's trade deadline, with the Sharks closely monitoring the situation throughout. Hoffman, one of the team's most productive forwards, was dumped to the Sharks, who quickly moved him to the Panthers.

Erik Karlsson is on the move. "We are going to build a culture of consistency which will allow this team to sustain better performance over the long term". The Sens send Karlsson to San Jose in exchange for eight assets. In 627 career regular season games over nine seasons with Ottawa, he has tallied 126 goals and 518 points.

Karlsson also has six goals and 31 assists in 48 career playoff games. DeMelo, 25, has recorded three goals in 133 National Hockey League games.

DeMelo played mostly on San Jose's third defensive pair last season when he had no goals and 20 assists in 63 games.

After watching the Matt Duchene saga hang over the Colorado Avalanche previous year, Ottawa Senators general manager Pierre Dorion clearly did not want to enter his season with his disgruntled star still on the roster.

The 22-year old Perron was drafted 190th overall in the seventh round of the 2014 draft by the Senators.
