The off-duty police officer who killed a man in his own Dallas home after reportedly confusing the apartment for her own was denied entry before she fired the fatal shots.

The Officer had just finished her shift and went to her South Side Flats apartment building where she allegedly entered the wrong unit and shot a man inside.

The officers who responded provided first aid at the scene before Jean was taken to Baylor University Medical Center and pronounced dead.

The officer was in full uniform at the time, police said.

The Dallas County District Attorney's Office is helping DPD with the investigation, Mitchell said. Responding police officers unsuccessfully tried to save Jean's life.

Jean was a 2016 alumni of Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.

A vigil has been organized this evening by Mothers Against Police Brutality outside Dallas Police Headquarters at 7 p.m.

Jean, a graduate of Harding University, was the son of the former permanent secretary of St. Lucia, Alison Jean, according to the St. Lucia Times.

"I want to give you details of what we know so far and to clear up some inconsistencies that have already been reported".

The Dallas police chief says it remains unclear whether there were any words exchanged or any other interaction between a police officer and her neighbor before she fatally shot him in his home.

At an early morning press conference, Mitchell refused to answer questions about what may have led up to the shooting.

On Friday morning, police did not immediately explain how the officer became confused as to which apartment was hers, or how she managed to get into the apartment.

Jean grew up in Saint Lucia and attended Harding University in Searcy, in the U.S. state of Arkansas, where he often led campus worship services before graduating in 2016, the school said in a statement.

"A blood sample was drawn to test for drugs and alcohol, we are in the process of obtaining a warrant, and we have also invited the Texas Rangers to conduct an independent investigation", she said, referring to the state law enforcement agency. That July, he went to work for PwC in risk assurance.
