Retired Brazil striker Ronaldo has thanked football fans for their support and revealed he will leave the Ibiza hospital on Monday.

Sources subsequently confirmed the reports to ESPN FC, and later on Sunday the 41-year-old said in a post on his official Twitter account that he is expected to be released shortly.

Brazilian World Cup victor and legendary striker Ronaldo has been admitted to an intensive care unit with pneumonia while on vacation in Ibiza, according to local reports.

"Tomorrow I will be discharged and I will return home".

According to a newspaper, Diario de Ibiza, Ronaldo asked for a transfer to a private hospital called Clinica Nuestra Señora del Rosario just before midnight the same day and is making positive progress.

Ronaldo, whose full name is Ronaldo Luiz Nazario de Lima, rose to fame for his exploits as a striker for many of Europe's top clubs, as well as the Brazilian national team.

He was instrumental when Brazil won the World Cup in 2002, scoring both goals as they beat Germany 2-0 in the final.

Following a glittering career at the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and AC Milan, Ronaldo's later years have seen him suffer with thyroid problems, which in turn have caused him to have issues controlling his weight.
