Field: 156 players (136 tour pros, 20 club pros).

Tiger Woods, who spotted his peers a year of gathering points, ranks 20th; Phil Mickelson, who has played on every U.S. Ryder/Presidents Cup team from 1995 on, is 10th; Bryson DeChambeau (currently ninth) is an interesting prospect to make his first team, much like Schauffele and Finau, both of whom have performed well on big stages this season. But it was worth it to experience the bigness of this.

Woods was of course the main draw in all this, and his galleries will be jam-packed again when he tees off at 9:23 a.m. ET Thursday with Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas. The merchandise tent that's as big as Festus. And if the course stays like this, they're gonna have a ton of birdies to cheer about.

"I was out on the course when Dustin Johnson teed off real early, and it was like watching a mob following him around - and we're going to have more of that as the week goes on", said Mike DeCola, general chairman for the 100th PGA Championship.

Dealing with all the noise would be more exhausting than playing five of six weeks - the current expected schedule - but Woods has always been good about shutting out such distractions and going about his business.

In the gallery, spectators dressed like golfers, tucked-in collared shirts and more pastels than an Easter brunch. "I came with my dad to see the stars and so it's fun to be bringing my son to something like this", explains Kevin White. Though other golfers, such as Brooks Koepka - the grand-nephew of 1964 World Series shortstop Dick Groat - look like Dick Butkus. He said, well what do you have in mind.

"I'm sure Jordan feels a little bit different this week than he does the other three majors, but that's normal", McIlroy said. And I know it has to do with timing and being able to get everything there at the same time, and as an amateur, that's what you're looking for: How are they able to generate the power and the distance?

2 dead, at least 34 injured in Sunday shootings
Police say the violence is unacceptable and they say they continue to take illegal guns off the streets. "We are a better city". Johnson said, while investigators have "really good leads" on several of the shootings, police have not made any arrests.

Oosthuizen was runner-up at the PGA a year ago and is one of a few players to have finished second at every major in his career.

At the driving range, hundreds of spectators stood behind a white picket fence, while dozens more stood impatiently behind them. "It was family, then academics and then golf". McIlroy is the best driver of the golf ball in the world, and if the course plays soft due to the rain then he could run away with major No. 5. It's just the concentration. I've come to the PGA in the seventh or eighth spot a couple of times. "He got that up and down and birdied his last hole of the day and from there on the rest is pretty much history". Tommy Fleetwood has become a force. Seventeen-year-old Jeremy Fox wore a white hat covered in Sharpie signatures.

"It's something very special for quite a large number of players at the moment that he's had his comeback and he's playing well and we have that chance really, we could eventually be playing with Tiger on a Sunday coming down the stretch", Fleetwood said. We tried to play the next day.

"I needed Monday off so I spent a few times in the ice bath just trying to get some inflammation down and just trying to get ready for the rest of the week", he said. "We're just not there yet". He also says his ordinary third rounds tend to follow hot rounds on Friday, like his 63 at Firestone. It's just something special. Justin Rose has been a stalwart.

"The ball is just plugging out there and if anything, it favors a guy who hits the ball high", Woods said.

Reed isn't the only Masters champ who was there.

St. Louis, MO, USA; PGA of America chief executive officer Pete Bevacqua addresses the media in a press conference during the Wednesday practice round of the PGA Championship golf tournament at Bellerive Country Club.
