Trump tackles Russian lawyer claims head on

One part of Mueller's inquiry and congressional investigations has focused on a meeting months before the November election in Trump Tower in NY between Russian officials, Donald Trump Jr., the president's eldest son, and other campaign aides.

As he has in the past, Trump insisted in a tweet that he did not know at the time about the meeting between his son Donald Jr. and Natalia Veselnitskaya, a lawyer with links to the Kremlin.

This morning, President Trump tweeted out an admission that contradicts over years worth of statements his team has made about the nature of the June 9, 2016 Trump Tower meeting.

"This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics - and it went nowhere", Trump said on Twitter. "I did not know about it!"

On Sunday, Trump tweeted an apparent response to stories by CNN and The Washington Post that said he is anxious about Donald Trump Jr.'s legal exposure following the infamous 2016 meeting.

"Most important, Trump confirmed that the meeting with Russians was created to obtain something valuable - previously undisclosed dirt on Hillary Clinton".

Political campaigns routinely pursue opposition research on their opponents, but not with foreign representatives from a country viewed as an adversary.

Sekulow also noted on Sunday that he himself had given a misleading statement a year ago when, on "This Week" and in other media appearances, he said Trump had nothing to do with the misleading statement given to the New York Times.

When the Trump Tower "dirt" meeting was first revealed last summer, Donald Trump Jr. claimed in a statement that the gathering had focused on adoption policy. Russian officials were under US sanctions at the time.

He would make just one par on the back nine to go along with three birdies, three bogeys and two double-bogeys for a four-over 40. Leishman is a shot back of countryman Day, with a 67 putting him in a share of fifth at nine under and well in contention.

Donald Jr. said later he realised the meeting was primarily aimed at lobbying against the 2012 Magnitsky sanctions law, which led to Moscow denying Americans the right to adopt Russian orphans.

Trump has said similar things about the June 2016 meeting.

"I don't represent Don Jr., but I will tell you I - I have no knowledge at all of Don Jr. being told that he's a target of any investigation and I have no knowledge of him being interviewed by the special counsel", Sekulow said.

"I had bad information at that time", the lawyer said.

Later Sunday, Jay Sekulow, one of the president's lawyers, defended the 2016 meeting.

The president's past comments decrying the press as an "enemy of the people" have incited anger among supporters at Trump rallies, and have been condemned by the United Nations as "strategic" and non-factual attacks that "increase the risk of journalists being targeted with violence". They purposely cause great division & distrust.

"They're talking about this blue wave", Trump said referring to way Democrats are depicted on electoral maps.

These are all significant developments in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into whether the Trump campaign conspired with the Russian government.
