At a morgue in Athens where identification efforts were centered, relatives were informed about the steps needed to match the bodies held there to a missing person, including providing DNA samples and dental records.

"The procedure is difficult, harder than that of other mass disasters which we have dealt with in the past as a forensics department", coroner Nikolaos Kalogrias said.

Germany's federal criminal police has sent a team of its forensics specialists to help in the process.

So far, there are 83 people reported dead as a result of the fire, which affected towns popular with tourists on the coast of Greece.

Hundreds fled to nearby beaches and jumped in the sea to outrun the flames and choking smoke.

Houses considered permanently unsafe were being sprayed with a red X signs, as structural inspections by housing experts were being carried out in parallel with ongoing house searches by rescue crews looking for more victims.

According to the medics, 11 of the 187 injured in the wildfire were still in intensive care due to their critical condition.

Dimitris Stergiou Kapsalis said: "That is my opinion, because I saw the cables on the pylon burning".

Fire services said they received at least 10 calls from motorists whose vehicles were stranded when roads became rivers after storms in the upscale districts of Maroussi and Ekali.

A separate wildfire broke out in another area close to Athens, though its cause may not be arson-related.

"We might have had less victims with a well-organized evacuation plan but when the fire began in the municipality of Penteli there was no evacuation order for the east part (of Attica) because of the direction of the wind", Bournos told CNN in an interview Wednesday, adding: "The fire was underestimated".

Tsipras' contrition comes after the main opposition New Democracy party criticized a government news conference on Thursday night where not one word of apology was heard. "A day after the tragedy, mainly to have my conscience clear and not because of mistakes, I offered my resignation to the prime minister, who told me it's a time to fight", Toskas told reporters on Thursday.

USA military officials told The Associated Press Wednesday that they had been helping Greece gather images of the fire-ravaged areas with combat drones and Navy surveillance aircraft.

"They speak of an evacuation plan". More than 500 homes were destroyed by the blaze.

The left-led government defended itself, saying there had been no time to evacuate people because the blaze spread very quickly.
