'Ant-Man & the Wasp' Dominates Weekend Box Office!

It's the first animated film to ever earn over $500 million at the North American box office, and the 12th film ever to pull off such a feat.

As for the rest of the box office, Incredibles 2 was able to take the #2 spot, knocking Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom down to the #3 spot.

Be that as it may, it makes Ant-Man and the Wasp's slightly disappointing opening... well, disappointing. However, before that's considered an issue, while Ultron only delivered a 2.4x multiplier, Homecoming delivered a 2.86x multiplier, the sixth best in the franchise, and the first Ant-Man enjoyed a healthy 3.15x multiplier. Sequels everywhere! And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how you get ants. That could make it hard to surpass the $180 million domestic run of the original Ant-Man, which had some impressive legs, but only time will tell.

"Ant-Man and the Wasp" is Marvel's third and final film in 2018 and caps off the biggest year at the box office for Disney's superhero studio. The MCU sequel debuted with $20.9 million in South Korea, a 78% leap from the original that almost eclipsed the $21.2 million the original earned in its entire theatrical run there. Future openings include a July 18 release in France followed by Germany (7/26), United Kingdom (8/2), Italy (8/14) and Japan (8/31).

"Incredibles 2" opened in France with $9.9 million, marking the second highest opening for a Pixar release behind "Finding Nemo".

Following a blockbuster Thursday night preview, the box office for Ant-Man and Wasp has slowed down a bit, but not with bad numbers by any means, as the movie still outperformed the first by 33%. Finally, Deadpool 2 took the 10th spot this weekend with an additional $1.6 million, bringing the grand total to $727.7 million globally. France quickly ranks as the sixth largest market for Incredibles 2 behind China ($48.7m), Mexico ($33.8m), Australia ($24.6m), Brazil ($15.4m) and Russian Federation ($14.3m). Incredibles 2 has yet to open in Japan, Spain, Italy, Germany and South Korea.

Also in the top five is Sony's "Sicario: Day of the Soldado". Similar to Solo, Infinity War brought in just under $1 million, bringing its domestic box office total to $675 million. If the film continues along its current trajectory it should easily break $200 million domestically, and enter the top five or six box offices of the year.

The flick opened Thursday with $11.5 million - almost double that of the first movie - but its Friday, Saturday and Sunday numbers didn't hold as high, which basically means a lot of the hard core fans went to see it Thursday night.

It also speaks to audiences.

Internationally, The First Purge debuted in 26 markets with an estimated $10.9 million. As per last weekend, the worldwide estimates are not available at this time.
