Solo Star Wars film underwhelms at box office

The newest Star Wars movie, Solo, opened this weekend-but it was not the hit that Disney and Lucasfilm would have wanted.

The number, while being the biggest Memorial Day Weekend debut in the last four years, is also solidly under industry expectations.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has earned £48.8 million overseas. China, which has never shown interest in "Star Wars", went to go see "Avengers" again this weekend as receipts for "Solo" in the Middle Kingdom only amounted to $10.1 million.

Fatigue or not, Disney has pushed forward on "Solo", despite production issues. On the flipside, the notion of burnout with all these Star Wars films can be felt to say nothing of the turbulent manner in which many fans find themselves.

Deadpool 2 should easily score the second slot, heading for a US$42 million three-day sophomore frame and a four-day total of around US$54 million. Solo also stars Emilia Clarke, Paul Bettany, Woody Harrelson, Joonas Suotamo, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Jon Favreau.

The acting standout in Solo, though, has to be Donald Glover as the young Lando Calrissian, a smuggler who we know will eventually become good friends with the eponymous Solo.

L’Equipe de France l’emporte 2-0 contre l’Irlande

Some skeptics may claim that the sour "Solo" box office points to Star Wars fatigue, but the true test of that won't come for almost 19 months, when J.J. Abrams's "Star Wars: Episode IX", the final installment of Disney's first main trilogy, opens right before Christmas. Down 44%, Infinity War has brought in $621.6 million domestically.

Star Wars is generally awesome and the films are usually strong in terms of quality. Back in June 2017, Solo's original directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie), quit the project over creative differences.

The Han Solo origin film fared less well than its fellow standalone, 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which opened to $155m in the U.S. and Canada. "It is summer, after all", said Dergarabedian. That's plenty of breathing space. To help propel "Solo" internationally, Disney brought the film to Cannes Film Festival, flooding the French film festival's red carpet with Storm Troopers.

Hollis even admitted that impressive worldwide box office returns aren't enough t save it. As well as starting work on the new trilogy which has already given us The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, Disney also started a series of spin-off, stand alone films.

Star Wars fans for years have been accustomed to the same blockbuster formula, a group of heroes fighting for freedom against not only tyranny but a dark force that enveloped everything it touched. He, too, is replacing a fired director after Colin Trevorrow departed last fall. Final domestic figures will be released Tuesday.
