NHL: Fleury stands in Caps' way of Stanley Cup title

With a win, they would become the first expansion team in any of the four major US sports leagues - the MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL - to win a title in their first season.

Sporting News will provide updates throughout Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. Two teams, the best in their respective conferences and divisions, will square off against one another with the sport's greatest prize on the line.

The Caps will face the Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final at T-Mobile Arena on Monday night. Washington was the only exception; the Golden Knights took Nate Schmidt from the Capitals, who has blossomed into the Golden Knights' top defenceman and is part of the Conn Smythe conversation. That means a home team that emerges victorious from Game 1 has won the Stanley Cup 84.2 percent of the time.

As a former member of the ECHL's Las Vegas Wranglers, Engelland came into the season as the only player with previous hockey experience in Las Vegas.

The Vegas Golden Knights' pregame introductions have become the NHL's most anticipated and kitschiest celebrations during the Stanley Cup playoffs. Believe it or not, those three times that I got my jaw broken, the only thing that happened was one two-minute penalty [laughs].

Real Madrid , the reigning champions, are chasing a record-extending 13th European title and a fourth win in five seasons. Salah's exit gave Real an immediate lift because they had been nervous and edgy up until that point in the game.

The expansion Golden Knights have won over Las Vegas residents during the team's surprising run to the Stanley Cup Final. Overall, franchise's making their first appearance hold a 10-16 record since 1939. For "Ovie" and co., they finally advanced past the second round. And fans in both markets can partially thank the guinea-pig Capitals of 43 years ago for hammering that point home.

"It's great to see him have success somewhere else", said Capitals defenseman John Carlson, one of 12 McPhee draft picks facing him in the final.

"It's one of the best shots in the league", Fleury said with a smile, perhaps flashing back to the moment he stopped what appeared to be a surefire goal by Ovechkin with the shaft of his stick in the Penguins' Game 7 win over the Capitals in the second round a year ago. There's never been a championship game in major professional sports in which one general manager had more to do with the construction of both participants. They boast a 2.87 goals-per-game average.

In fact, the opening game of the final series of the season has only headed to extra time on 15 occasions. Ovechkin is looking to finally erase his status as the best National Hockey League player without a championship.

The games are all sellouts, of course.

"We made our selection, and then (the Capitals) called and asked if there's any way we could do a deal for him to get Schmidt back", said Golden Knights GM George McPhee, who had no intention of relinquishing him. I need to write everything down, otherwise I will forget most tasks and if somebody tells me something or they want me to do something, I tell them either send me an e-mail or I have to write it down, otherwise I'll forget certain things.
